He was born in Orange County, California and after a difficult childhood, was eventually adopted and raised by a local Samoan family on the South Pacific island of Upolu Samoa, where he lived an island lifestyle in a small village with no refrigerators, no beds, no TVs, or modern amenities where villagers all survived on fishing and farming and family disputes were solved by the "Fa'amatai"system, comprised of benevolent and wise village chiefs. Today we chat with Iakopo about his unique, global upbringing, how this started and affected his music, his creative influences and his perspective on the world and what the future holds for his music!

In 1958 a little bar in North Hollywood opened on Victory Blvd named "Tonga Hut." Back then, a gallon of gas was a quarter, the average cost of a new house was $12,000, Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States and The Beatles hadn't even formed yet. Since the Tonga Hut has been open, the Berlin Wall was raised (and demolished), Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, television went from black and white to color to high-definition digital, reggae was born, disco was born, hip-hop was born, new wave was born, grunge was born and the United States has had 11 different presidents. And all that time, the Tonga Hut had it's doors open, welcoming visitors from near and close, far and wide. Today we release our 100th episode!
In October of 2016, we launched this podcast from Inside the Desert Oasis Room, hence the name. For those that don't know, this podcast was started as a fluke. I actually had a different type of project in mind and when the first episode hit a couple of snafus, I temporarily launched it as a podcast and never looked back. Since that initial launch, we've released a new episode every week without fail and fast forward to today, we now bring to you episode number 100. I honestly, never expected to still be podcasting 2 years later! I never envisioned sponsorship, merch, mugs, event appearances and room parties or even doing this full-time as a profession but here we are today! None of this would be possible without our sponsors, guests and patrons of the show. So for that I offer my humblest gratitude to all of you. THANK YOU!
And because of the unexpected origin of this show, I thought it would be fitting to have the esteemed Martin Cate, tiki and cocktail authority, be our guest on this milestone of an episode. Why?
